Story of the Rotary Club of Niskayuna
The Niskayuna club was chartered in February of 1955. It was sponsored by the Rotary club of Schenectady. At that time Albert Martin, president of Schenectady Savings Bank, was the main inspiration and impetus for the formation of the club. He was very active an well known in the community. He began to recruit business leaders in the community to a weekly meeting at his home in Niskayuna.
As membership increased, meetings moved to the Ritz Restaurant on Van Vranken Ave. From there they moved to the City Squire on Keyes Ave, to the Edison Club on Riverview Road, as well as a few other locations for short durations. For a couple of decades before Covid-19, the club was meeting at the Blue Ribbon Restaurant & Bakery at 1801 State Street, Schenectady, NY. They currently meet on Tuesday mornings at 7:15 am.
In 2021, we created the Heartbeat eClub, serving women and children globally, that is currently meeting Saturday mornings at 9AM, alternating weeks on Zoom and on WhatsApp.
Niskayuna Rotary is one of the most diverse you will ever find in Rotary. Members come from all walks of life. We have members born on 5 continents, representing as many religions and cultures. Members include doctors, authors, teachers, engineers, patent holders, world champions (in ballroom dancing and a balloonist), CEOs and members who don't have access to reliable electricity or Internet . . . who all delight in kidding one another and supporting one another. We work locally and we work with partners around the globe.
